套筒式氣彈簧有一根直徑較大的活塞桿，活塞上開有一個(gè)節(jié)流小孔，使活塞左右兩腔相通，其工作原理是：當(dāng)套筒內(nèi)腔充入有壓力的氣體后，因活塞上有一節(jié)流小孔，使活塞左右兩腔壓力相等，可見該套筒內(nèi)的活塞是按差動(dòng)原理工作的。由于有一根直徑較大的活塞桿，使活塞右腔的受力大干左腔的受力，因而在活塞上作用著一個(gè)復(fù)位力，活塞在此復(fù)位力的推動(dòng)下，將移動(dòng)到左端位置。當(dāng)用手力加大載荷時(shí)，可克服活塞的復(fù)位力，使活塞緩慢移動(dòng)到右端位置，這時(shí)可用機(jī)械機(jī)構(gòu)將負(fù)載鎖緊，當(dāng)打開鎖緊機(jī)構(gòu)后，復(fù)位力則克服負(fù)載，使負(fù)載在括塞復(fù)位力的推動(dòng)下，自動(dòng)復(fù)位回到開始位置。
套筒式氣彈簧具有以下一些特點(diǎn)：
(1)對(duì)于同一內(nèi)徑的套筒式氣彈簧，當(dāng)內(nèi)腔充氣壓力增大時(shí)，復(fù)位力隨著壓力的增大而增大，這使得同一種套筒式氣彈簧，可以適應(yīng)多種負(fù)載的要求。
(2)活塞上開有節(jié)流小孔，當(dāng)空氣流過節(jié)流小孔時(shí)，由于氣阻而吸收一部分振動(dòng)能量，從而起到了減振阻尼作用。
(3)與鋼彈簧相比，在承受激烈振動(dòng)載荷時(shí)，套筒式氣彈簧的壽命較長(zhǎng)，在同樣行程條件下，套筒式氣彈簧的長(zhǎng)度較短。
(4)結(jié)構(gòu)簡(jiǎn)單、新穎，零件較少，制造方便，成本下降。
